Getting To Know Your Neighbor
This month’s featured neighborhood resident is the Color Connection, a unique combination business/passion/love affair dedicated to promoting, facilitating, and enhancing fine art.
Origin
The Color Connection gallery was founded 18 years ago by a group of local artists out of a shared concern for what they believed to be a relative lack of exhibition opportunities in our community along with a desire to showcase the vast and varied talents of local artists. After a successful run on Peoria Avenue for ten years, Color Connection, like so many of our Utica Square neighbors, was invited to move to their present location at the east end of the Square in 2000.
Unique Selling Proposition
Due to limited space and their unwavering commitment to excellence, each would-be artist/exhibitor must pass a rigorous approval process based on material quality and appropriateness. Although the process can seem somewhat arduous, Color Connection’s judges adhere to their single guiding principle of displaying only “fine art in fine taste.” The gallery takes justifiable pride in presenting original art only . . . no prints please . . . done by some of the very best local and regional talent.
In addition to the core group of 11 artists who are owners, Color Connection can feature as many as three to four times that many artists actively exhibiting at any given moment.
What You Don’t Know About Color Connection
While the Color Connection was created for providing exhibition opportunities for local art talent, the influence of some of the major partners and participants extends far beyond Tulsa and the state of Oklahoma. Many Color Connection participating artists enjoy national reputations and are exhibited regularly in major art markets throughout the U.S. including Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. Some are even regularly collected around the world!
What To Expect When You Go There
The Color Connection holds the distinction of being the only business in our neighborhood where the inventory is always new and never the same from one visit to the next. In addition, Color Connection is dedicated first and foremost to encouraging art and art appreciation on all levels. When you go there, expect an easy-going laidback atmosphere which has been the goal of the owners from the very start. They pride themselves in maintaining a low-key, low-pressure, down-to-earth setting in which art aficionados at any level . . . from students to serious collectors . . . can feel welcome and at home. At any given moment Color Connection provides a multi-medium art experience ranging from jewelry, pottery, and bronze sculpture to the more traditional forms such as paint on canvas.
